Here are 11 low-maintenance plants that can flourish in your garden and make landscaping for Kansas City homeowners a piece of cake! (As long as you water them, of course).

Boxwoods

Don’t have a green thumb? Want plants that you can practically neglect and will still thrive in this crazy Kansas City weather? You can’t go wrong with boxwood bushes!

Catmint

Catmints are drought-tolerant, so no rain means no worries! These plants love the sun and are a pretty purple-blue vibrant color. They are generally low-growing varieties and rebloom throughout the year. Pretty and practical!

Hosta

Hostas are great shade plants. They are rugged and varied perennials that are drought tolerant and have the ability to store water. Hosta leaves come in a variety of greens, blues, and even a light soft creamy white. Fertilize them each spring and you’re good to go!

Allium

Alliums are drought and heat tolerant, so you won’t have to worry about those hot summer days. They are one of the easiest bulbs to grow and are a heavy pollinator attracter! They offer a wide range of colors, height, and bloom time, and come in clumps of rounded grasslike leaves or nodding flower heads.

Daylily

These plants are nearly impossible to kill! Daylilies are sun-loving yet can tolerate shade. They can also tolerate drought, produce large, colorful flowers, and are hardy perennials.

Poppy

Large poppy blooms bring bright pops of summer with their orange, red, pink, and cream coloring. Poppy flowers need limited watering and a sunny location. They will turn heads throughout the neighborhood!

Salvia

Fuss-free Salvia plants come in various heights and different colors. They attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Bees love pollinating Salvias too, and guess what – they’re heat and drought tolerant as well!

Peony

Sun and well-drained soil is all you need for these beauties! You can expect glossy-green foliage and wonderful smelling late-spring blooms. Peonies are fluffy and come in different sizes. Although their blooms don’t last long, they are well worth the effort.

Yarrow

Yarrow is a hardy and versatile perennial. Yarrows are typically avoided by deer and rabbits and can make it through the summer heat and drought. They can be red, pink, or yellow, and consist of small and tightly-packed flowers above ferny foliage.

Switchgrass

Add some switchgrass to your landscaping for a natural boho vibe! Switchgrass is a fountain-shaped ornamental grass that has blue-green foliage in the summer and golden and red tones in the fall. Remove weeds and provide mulch around the base to watch it prosper.

Coneflower

Deer resistant and tough, this plant will shoot up in a sunny location. Hybrids come in multiple colors ranging from orange to green to the plants native pale purple. Bees and butterflies love pollinating the coneflower’s drooping petals.
