Scale Everything Down

Furniture for your space is all about proportions! If you want to make a space look bigger, it’s important that you invest in couches and tables that fit the room. For example, if you have a humongous sectional in your tiny living room the space will feel cramped. This goes for decor such as wall art and mirrors as well.

Invest In Organization

One of the best things you can do to maximize your space is to invest in organizational tools. Buy furniture that can double as seating and storage. Take advantage of vertical height by hanging shelves. If you need to make your home work temporarily before moving to a larger space, consider renting a storage space. You’ll create a calmer atmosphere by getting rid of some of the stuff cluttering your home!

Hang Mirrors

Mirrors can create a sense of openness. They reflect both light and the view of the room, making it feel bigger than it is. Trick the eye with mirrors!

Window Treatments

Carefully consider the window treatments in your home. Natural lighting can do wonders for creating an open, clean, and welcoming environment. Drapes add unnecessary clutter to a room and can make a room feel smaller. Think about either ditching them completely or swapping them for a lightweight alternative.

Ditch The Rugs

Believe it or not, oversized rugs can make your space feel cluttered. If you want a rug for comfort, make sure it is minimal and not much larger than the rest of the furniture. You won’t want it to take over the space.

Paint It White

Painting the walls white will open up the room and leave it feeling light and airy. Painting the ceiling white can also help in making the space feel larger and the ceilings feel higher. A fresh coat of paint can help create the illusion of a larger space! Keep your decor and furniture light shades as well for a similar effect.

Go For A Feature Wall

Now that everything is white, opt for a feature wall that gives some character to the room. Horizontal or vertical stripes in the room create a sense of dynamism. This will allow your eyes to travel in an orderly fashion, and can the room feel larger. The same is true for geometric wallpaper. Just don’t overdo it! One wall is all it takes to create a beautiful focal point.

Widen Narrow Doorways

Widening narrow doorways can also make a room feel larger than it actually is. You can do this by painting the edges of your doorway with contrasting colors to generate an illusion. Or, if you live in an older home, consider removing some doors and creating more of an open-concept feel!

Invest In The Right Furniture

Furniture such as hutches, buffets, sideboards, and bookshelves can help you maximize any space. Try to find thin pieces that are tall in height. This way, they won’t take up much walking space but you’ll get the added storage benefit.

Keep It Simple

Above all, make sure to keep the room simple and the rest will follow! Now’s the time to embrace minimalism. Less is more in this case. Before you start painting, remodeling or buying new furniture, you probably need to do some decluttering! When in doubt, throw it out! Donate items you haven’t used in the last year. We promise you’ll feel so much better with less stuff!
