Get Rid Of Stuff

One of the best ways to get prepared for a move is to get rid of the clutter! Donate items if you haven’t used them in the past year. If you think you can make a profit off of some of the items, try and sell them online! Facebook marketplace is a great resource for selling gently used items. As you’re packing up your belongings, ask yourself if you really want or need each item. If the answer is no, or you’re hesitating too long, toss it!

Label & Categorize Your Boxes

Be sure to label and categorize your boxes! After all, it’s important to know what is in each box! This will definitely help save you time and headaches while unpacking. Our advice is to label each box by room. This will make it easier for yourself, family members, friends, and movers to unload the items without having to ask you a million questions.

Be Organized From The Beginning

Invest in moving organization tools such as a binder, label maker and color coded boxes! Once you’ve cleared out some of the clutter in your home, organize the items you want to keep! Your desk, for example, likely has a lot of paperwork and other random items in it. Go through it, decide what you want to keep and then organize those items before you move into your new home!

Set A Realistic Timeline

You know what they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day! Set a realistic timeline for your move. You’ll likely have a longer to-do list than you can even imagine! Write out every task you need to get done, and set a timeline. About a month before the move, start tackling an item off your list each day. This will make sure you’re not as overwhelmed when moving day approaches!

Hire Professionals

If you can afford it, we highly recommend hiring a professional moving company! They’ll help you load heavy furniture, and make sure it enters your new home without ruining your walls or the furniture itself. Make sure you do your research on reputable companies! Just like home builders, not all professional moving companies are easy to work with! You want to make sure you hire trustworthy, reliable and friendly professionals!

Protect Your Fragile Items

Invest in some bubble wrap! Protect your fragile items by wrapping them in old blankets and towels. Pack dishes vertically so that the weight is evenly distributed. If you have a family keepsake, heirloom or treasure, be sure to take accountability for that item yourself.

Purchase What You Need In Advance

Many new homes need a few additional components before you can live there comfortably! These may include toilet paper holders, hangers for your hand towels, cleaning supplies and other daily household essentials. Gearing these up and having them ready for move-in day will make the experience much more enjoyable!

Stop Buying Perishables

A week before your move, stop buying perishable groceries such as milk and veggies. Take a look at the supplies you already have on hand and get creative with your cooking! You likely already have all the supplies in your pantry to make a big pot of chili or spaghetti!

Bring Cleanings Supplies

A good home builder should have your home spotless and ready for you to take occupancy immediately! With that said, you might want to disinfect certain areas of your home before unloading all your possessions. Kitchen cabinets, for instance, should be disinfected before you place your dinnerware, glasses and utensils inside them. Be sure to wipe down the light switches and door handles with a disinfectant. If you’re moving into a brand new home, be sure to ask your home builder about floor care! Oftentimes, new hardwood floors need to be treated carefully in the first few months.

Call In Favors Early

Moving into a new home and unpacking can be a huge undertaking. This is especially true for those who have a large household. With managing your family, and your career, there’s likely a lot on your to-do list as it is! Don’t hesitate to call in the troops. Your friends and family members are likely very happy to help. Just be sure to give them plenty of notice. After all, they likely have a lot going on in their own lives! Make the experience fun by playing music, having hot pizza delivered and serving up some cold ones!

Update Your Address

Change your address the week before you move! You might want to contact your credit card companies and insurance agents. Don’t forget to change your address on your utilities, recurring payments, and dear ole’ amazon!

Pack An Overnight Bag

Unpacking your new home will take a few days, or even possibly a month! Likely, in the first few days it will be impossible to find everything you need! Pack an overnight bag for you and your family members. For every member of your family, bring a change of clothes, pajamas, toiletries and personal hygiene items. You’ll be thankful you don’t have to open a ton of boxes to find your toothbrush!
