Tell us about Walston Door Company! How did the business start and what is your mission?
Jessica Says: “We are a husband and wife owned business that started out of our home in 2016. We were remodeling our basement and were in need of a barn door so Caleb got to work building and I (Jessica) finished up with stain! Caleb’s perfectionist personality wasn’t thrilled with the size he built and wanted it a little bit wider so he listed it on Craigslist and built a new one for our basement. He enjoyed it and figured he’d keep building as long as they keep selling and soon enough we had customers asking for all sorts of different designs, colors, sizes, etc. Fast forward a few years and now Caleb has quit his office job, we have a shop in North Kansas City, 3 employees, and 2 contractors. We still have a lot of room to grow and excited for what the future holds!”
What are your doors made of and how are they built? Any special procedures or products that you use?
Jessica Says: “Most of our doors are made of solid wood such as pine, alder, and white oak but depending on the design we’ve used all kinds of different materials. We’ve been incorporating a lot of textured glass and mirrors in doors as well. It’s exciting to see what ideas our customers come up with. We’ve even done a door made to look like a concrete slab! All of our doors are made by the hands of our employees in our NKC shop. We use a special process to engineer our door stiles that makes them very stable.”
Tell us about your showroom and what that process looks like for customers.
Jessica Says: “We love having clients visit our shop and showroom! Our showroom consists of mini versions of different door styles we offer along with a few regular sized doors to show how the hardware works. We have different stain and paint samples on display and examples of various door handle options. We are open by appointment and love to show our clients where their door will be constructed, who actually builds their door, and see the design and color options first hand.”
Where do people usually incorporate these doors in their homes? Master bedroom? Office? Any unique placements?
Jessica Says: “The most popular place for a barn door is that awkward master bathroom/bedroom opening with no door separating the two. People love to add a barn door there not only to create privacy but also to keep things quiet and block light if one person is awake before the other early in the morning. Other popular areas of the home are kitchen pantries, offices, storage rooms, etc. We’ve even had people create barn door “walls” to create another bedroom space to help with resale value!”
How long does a door usually take to complete from start to finish?
Jessica Says: “Typically we run about 6-8 weeks out for production time due to the amount of orders we have, but the actual time spent building and finishing can take anywhere from 6 to 20 hours depending on how custom and intricate the door is.”
What doors are some fan favorites? Any cool trends right now?
Jessica Says: “Our white oak geometric design is a huge hit! We find ourselves shipping this one to California quite often.”
What price range can customers expect?
Jessica Says: “Pricing varies depending on size, style, and finish. If someone is looking for a more basic door they could be looking at around $800, but if someone is in need of a very large door with all of the bells and whistles is could be closer to $2,000.”
Do you deliver the final product and install it? Any additional fee for that?
Jessica Says: “Yes! Our goal is to make the entire barn door process as simple as possible. We offer delivery and installation which runs $250 for single door deliveries within 25 miles of our NKC shop.”
Any warranty on your product?
Jessica Says: “Absolutely! We cover any manufacturer defect with the doors or hardware for one year.”
